In order to make companions more or less effective pretty specific builds required. Here are the ones I am usually use: Blackwall - Ultimate tank. Sword and shield. Recommended setup: Tank warrior, mage, rogue (ranged if AI, either weapon type if Inquisitor), wildcard DPS (typically the Inquisitor). For example, my choice for a dual-wielding melee rogue Inquisitor, I'd go with Blackwall, ranged Cole after a respec and Dorian. 2.
That isnt to say that mage isn't fun, it's just a bit neutered of an experience compared to what a dragon age mage has been before. They're great at support and AoE control, and they do have some fun spells like static cage. So if that's your jam then they'd be a good pick regardless of my complaints. 5.
